At the age of 22, Jim Britton Jr., started Britton Landscaping with a pickup truck and a single lawn mower. The business took off, and soon, Jim had to hire two friends to help meet the growing demand.
While landscaping provided a solid foundation, Jim always had his sights set on construction. Balancing his thriving landscaping business, Jim ventured into land clearing with just a chipper and a family friend's backhoe.
The raw material accumulated from land clearing was piling up. Jim was buying mulch for his landscaping division, but knew he could create a superior product for less. Investing in his first grinder marked the beginning of Mid-Jersey Mulch.
As Britton’s operations expanded, storing materials at his family’s farm in West Windsor, NJ, became impractical. Recognizing the need for more space, Jim purchased the Lawrenceville facility. Today, this facility is our most popular location.
Mid-Jersey Mulch, Britton Contracting and Britton Concrete joined together to establish Britton Industries, a mulch manufacturing, recycling, land clearing and concrete company.
Faced with high diesel costs and frequent downtime, Jim sought a more efficient solution for material grinding. Thus began the long trial and error, and eventual success, of our electric grinders, examples of efficiency and sustainability at all four of our locations.
Facing increasing challenges with overseas colorant purchases and shipment delays, Britton needed a reliable solution. Our Concrete Division Manager, Jim McNellis, used his background in chemistry to develop Britton’s own mulch colorants, ensuring consistent supply and quality. This strategic innovation has been a cornerstone of our success ever since.
Britton sprung into action to combat the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. We performed on-site grinding, street-by-street clean ups and removal of wood and vegetative waste throughout the state of New Jersey. Over 60% of all wood waste generated by Sandy was removed, processed, and recycled. This work was completed while Britton continued to operate its recycling facilities at full capacity.
We were quickly outgrowing our offices at the Lawrenceville yard, so Morrisville was purchased to become our new headquarters. The site needed a lot of cleaning and excavating but after lots of sweat and hard work, we were able to move our team to their new offices.
Better known as our Marlton, New Jersey facility. This helped expand our market reach to new territory, in addition to better servicing our existing South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania customers.
The opportunity to grow into Eastern Pennsylvania arose with our Telford location and we jumped on it. This allowed us to better serve our Montgomery County customers and go up into Lehigh Valley more efficiently.
In response to rising demand for bagged materials, Britton Landscaping expanded its distribution methods to include bags by the pallet. We installed two fully electric production lines and are now producing our own bagged products, as well as co-packing for other suppliers.
To accommodate our rapidly growing company, we constructed a state-of-the-art facility in Morrisville, PA. Spanning more than 50,000 square feet, our offices and maintenance department have the space they need to thrive.
