our story

how it all started.

1989
Started off landscaping
At the age of 22, Jim Britton Jr. started Britton Landscaping with a pickup truck and one lawn mower. Britton Landscaping quickly picked off the ground and Jim ended up hiring two friends to help keep up with the demand.
1991
land-clearing Division
While landscaping was a great starting point, Jim Britton knew he always wanted to get into construction. Jim continued his landscaping business on the side but dove into small land clearing jobs with nothing more than a chipper and a family friend’s backhoe.
1995
Mid-Jersey Mulch
The raw material accumulated from land-clearing was piling up. Jim was buying mulch for his landscaping division, however knew he could create a product for much cheaper. So he bought his first grinder, which was the beginning of Mid-Jersey Mulch.
1997
Lawrenceville Facility was Purchased
Jim was storing all of the material at his families farm in West Windsor, NJ. However, he needed somewhere else to put it. So he bought the Lawrenceville facility. This is still one of our most popular locations to this day.
2003
the creation of Britton industries
Mid Jersey Mulch, Britton Contracting and Britton Concrete joined together to establish Britton Industries, the mulch recycling, land clearing and concrete company.
2008
Electric Stationary was built
With the amount of money that was being spent on diesel and the constant downtime, Jim knew there had to be a better way to grind material. This began the constant trial and error and eventual success of our electric grinders that we have at four of our locations.
2011
colorant division established
We bought our colorants over-seas thus far. However, it was beginning to prove more difficult to purchase and the shipments were delayed. So our prior Concrete Division Manager, Jim McNellis, had a background in chemistry, and took on the challenge of making mulch colorants and it’s been successful ever since.
2014
Morrisville Yard was purchased
We were quickly outgrowing our offices at the Lawrenceville yard, so Morrisville was purchased to become our headquarters. The site needed a lot of cleaning and excavating but after lots of sweat and hard work, we were able to move our team to their new offices.
2016
Britton Acquires south jersey recycling facility
Better known as our Marlton, New Jersey facility. This helped expand our market area to new territory, in addition to servicing our existing South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania customer base.
2019
Eastern Pennsylvania Demand
The opportunity to grow into Eastern Pennsylvania arose with our Telford location and we jumped on it. This allowed us to better serve our Montgomery county customers and go up into Lehigh Valley more efficiently.
2020
Snow birds
Jim Britton had dreamed of opening a facility in Florida because the mulch season was the opposite time of the year as our Northeastern facilities. So, after years of searching, an opportunity popped up to acquire an existing recycling facility in Vero Beach and it became our Florida location.
2022
Bags anyone?
An increase in demand for bagged material, brought us to expand our distribution method to include bags by the pallet. We installed two fully electric lines and are now producing our own bagged products, as well as co-packing for other suppliers.
